Description
The American Mountain Ash is a smallish tree which is low branched and usually multi-stemmed. Branches are upright and the crown is open and rounded.
The leaves are dark green and compound with eleven to seventeen leaflets and have excellent fall color.
The red fruit on large terminal clusters attracts winter birds including waxwing and grosbeak.
The winter buds are black, sharply pointed and sticky. These buds give a distinguishing feature when compared to the European Mountain Ash (Sorbus aucuparia), which has large fuzzy buds.
The small flowers are white and showy born in numerous clusters in the spring.
A great four season specimen tree with attractive dark green foliage, outstanding orange to red fall color, persistent red fruit, copper-green-red bark color and showy white spring flowers.
